Historically, Santos’ family grew only a small amount of coffee, primarily for personal consumption and selling a minor surplus. Recognizing the potential for coffee to provide a better livelihood, Santos Pablo Ramirez made a significant choice eight years ago by investing in a new plot of land that featured poorly maintained coffee plants. Through dedicated hard work, he has rehabilitated the farm and planted additional coffee trees, striving to achieve both high yields and exceptional quality. Santos belongs to El Sendero, a cooperative formed in 2016 to offer support and resources to coffee producers around Concepcion Huista in the Huehuetenango region. The cooperative comprises 196 members, including 62 women and 134 men, with a core focus on fostering gender equality and empowering the youth. Coffee production is a collective family endeavor, where everyone collaborates to move forward. Each day, they work diligently to enhance their agricultural practices, aiming to produce exceptional coffee and secure a better income.
